From Baoguo Temple, the sightseeing bus climbs to Leidongping; then the cable car up to Golden Summit—sea of clouds below, the Ten Directions Puxian statue appearing and disappearing in the mist. Mount Emei is one of Buddhism’s Four Sacred Mountains and a UNESCO mixed cultural and natural site, peaking at 3,099 m. Most visitors don’t hike the whole way; they combine bus, cable car, and walking. One day is enough for a Golden Summit round trip; two days allow time for the mid- and lower sections—Wannian Temple, Qingyin Pavilion, and the monkey area. Weather on the mountain is changeable; the summit is often windy and cold, a sharp contrast to Chengdu below.

What Makes it Worth It

Mountain, Buddhism, and nature in one: Golden Summit’s Ten Directions Puxian statue, sea of clouds, and sunrise; the mid-section temples (Wannian Temple, Qingyin Pavilion) and the ecological monkey area; and the shift in vegetation and climate from base to peak.
Different from Leshan: Leshan is one focal point—scale in one place. Emei is a full route—one day for the summit only, or two days to cover base to top.
Access and itineraries: About 1–1.5 hours by high-speed train from Chengdu to Emeishan station. A two-day “Leshan + Emei” loop is common. With limited time, a one-day Golden Summit round trip is possible but requires an early start.

What to Expect

Crowds:
  • Peak season (roughly Apr–Oct) and holidays: Golden Summit and cable cars get busy; queues for the Leidongping–Golden Summit cable car often exceed one hour
  • Weekday mornings are relatively lighter
Physical:
  • Hiking the full way to Golden Summit is unrealistic for most
  • Typical approach: sightseeing bus to Leidongping (about 2 hours) → cable car to Golden Summit → about 1 hour walking the summit loop
  • Adding mid/lower sections (Wannian Temple, Qingyin Pavilion, monkey area) needs at least two days
Weather:
  • Summit is high, windy, and cold; bring a jacket even in summer
  • Sea of clouds and sunrise are weather-dependent; fog is common
Tickets:
  • Advance booking required; first entry requires face capture at the gate; ticket valid for two calendar days
  • Foreign visitors can book via the official website or buy on-site

Don't Miss

Golden Summit and Ten Directions Puxian — The summit is Emei’s highest point—the Ten Directions Puxian statue, Huazang Temple, sea of clouds, and sunrise. Bus to Leidongping then cable car is the fastest way up; allow about 1 hour to walk the summit loop. For sunrise, stay near Leidongping or Golden Summit the night before, or set out from the base very early the same day.
Wannian Temple — Mid-mountain temple; reach by bus to Wannian Temple stop then cable car or on foot. With only one day, most skip it and head straight for Golden Summit; on a two-day trip, pair it with Qingyin Pavilion on day two.
Qingyin Pavilion and ecological monkey area — Qingyin Pavilion combines landscape and historic buildings; the monkey area has wild Tibetan macaques. Follow park rules—do not feed or provoke the monkeys. The monkey area is in the mid/lower section, suited to day two of a two-day visit or a half-day from the base.

Getting There

Train:
  • High-speed train from Chengdu East or Chengdu South to Emeishan station, about 1–1.5 hours, second class about ÂĄ65
  • From the station, taxi or bus to Baoguo Temple / Huangwan visitor center, about 10–20 minutes
By car:
  • Chengdu to Mount Emei scenic area about 160 km, about 2 hours
  • Parking at the site; fills in peak season
Common mistake: Allowing only half a day or starting in the afternoon—the one-way trip to Golden Summit (bus + cable car + walk) takes hours. Allow a full day and start early. For sunrise, stay on the mountain the night before or leave the base in the early hours.

Mount Emei strings “mountain, Buddhism, and sea of clouds” into one route—one day for the summit, two days to include the mid/lower temples and monkey area. Just over an hour from Chengdu by train, it pairs easily with Leshan Giant Buddha for a two-day loop.

If you only want "one mountain day," a summit day-trip is enough. If you want temples and monkeys, plan two days or stay overnight.
